Astigmatism
What is astigmatism?
Irregular corneal curvature is called astigmatism. Astigmatism is not a disease and is relatively common: about 20% of cataract patients have moderate to severe astigmatism.
With this kind of ametropia, the surface of the cornea is not regularly but irregularly shaped.
To put it simply: an eye without astigmatism is round like a ball. With astigmatism, the curvature of the eye is more like a rugby ball.
Objects are blurred, dots can appear as lines and straight edges are distorted. One manifestation of this defective vision is that objects are perceived with a shadow pointing in a certain direction. Under certain circumstances, uncorrected astigmatism can also be accompanied by double vision.

Treatment
How can astigmatism be corrected?
The irregular curvature of the cornea with astigmatism can be corrected with glasses or contact lenses. To create the corrective effect, the visual aid has a cylindrical or toric shape with two different curvatures (see illustration) instead of a uniform shape. The different curves compensate for the curvature of the cornea and the visual defect is corrected.

Can astigmatism also be corrected during cataract surgery?
In cataract surgery, a premium intraocular lens can be implanted instead of a standard lens to correct astigmatism. The TORICA® has the same effect as a toric vision aid and compensates for astigmatism. The toric IOL is aligned in the interior of the eye and compensates for the curvature of the cornea. Compared to conventional toric IOLs, TORICA® is optimized to improve contrast sensitivity. Patients benefit from effective and stable correction of astigmatism.
The patient has a very good chance of being able to do without distance glasses and achieve much better vision. 100% of patients who were treated with TORICA® in a clinical study would choose implantation again. Read more.
TORICA®corrects your astigmatism and gives you clear vision without glasses. However, you will still need glasses to read. The combination of toric and multifocal principles allows freedom from glasses in the near, intermediate, and far range even with existing astigmatism.
Treatment costs
How much does the treatment cost?
The cost of cataract treatment is covered by health insurance in Germany. The additional costs for the use of a premium IOL are borne by the patient. Please contact your healthcare provider for information on individual health services.
Successful implantation of a toric lens will save you the cost of expensive eyeglass lenses to correct your astigmatism.
