TRIVA
No need for reading glasses
Trifocal IOLs
TRIVA – The IOL for vision at all distances
Presbyopia (or aging eye condition) is an ageing-related decrease in visual acuity at close range which makes reading without glasses impossible. Presbyopia is part of the natural aging process of the eye and affects almost everyone sooner or later. To enable sharp vision at all distances the lens of the eye has to be elastic, but with presbyopia this elasticity decreases over time, and the lens becomes more rigid. The first symptoms usually appear after the age of 40.
Even after the successful treatment of cataract with a standard IOL, reading glasses are usually still required.
The TRIVA from HumanOptics is a premium IOL designed to correct presbyopia and provide a natural visual impression over all distances without glasses through a smart combination of innovative technologies.
Overview of topics
Vision at all distances
Are reading glasses necessary
after treatment for cataracts?
Standard IOLs are monofocal, which means that it is usually necessary to wear reading glasses with them. Monofocal IOLs (IOLs with only one focal power) are optimized for sharp vision at one distance. This focal strength is mainly used to correct distance vision, making nearby objects blurry and reading glasses necessary.
Trifocal IOLs (that is multifocal lenses), on the other hand, enable improved visual comfort at all distances. Like varifocal glasses, these multifocal IOLs make it possible to see objects sharply, not only in the distance, but also at intermediate and near-vision ranges.

Successful treatment usually eliminates the need for the day-to-day use of glasses. Please note that getting used to the new visual impression can take some time.
If you have been diagnosed with astigmatism, you can free yourself from the need to wear glasses by combining multifocal and toric lenses. Find out more about TRIVAT here.
Functional principle
How does the TRIVA work?
TRIVA is produced in an elaborate manufacturing process. Special ring-like structures are created on the surface of the optic (see illustration). When viewed at a much larger magnification, these structures look like stepped rings, the precise height and distance of which are crucial for visual quality. This structure is what produces the sharp image of objects at different distances.
TRIVA’s smart design is optimized to minimize optical side effects. For example, the ring structure which enables vision at different distances, can also cause undesirable side effects, such as halos and glare. To avoid these, the ring zone of the TRIVA is focused on the central area of the optics and does not extend over the entire lens, as is the case with other manufacturers’ IOLs. The result is excellent imaging properties with less optical interference.
The inner zone of TRIVA is designed to provide a high degree of tolerance to physiological factors of the eye, enabling independence from glasses for the widest possible patient group. TRIVA’s smart technology is based on our nearly 20 years of experience in manufacturing multifocal intraocular lenses. Trust our long years of expertise.
Meeting vision requirements for a digital world
Rapidly advancing digitalization has placed new demands on vision. Maintaining an active social life increasingly requires the use of digital communication media, such as smartphones, computers, and tablets. Mobile devices help to overcome distance barriers, stay in touch and shape our everyday lives. Changes in leisure activities and aesthetic standards of younger patients have also driven their desire for independence from glasses.
The concept of the TRIVA trifocal lens is specially tailored to these needs. This IOL makes it possible to perform most everyday activities independent from glasses. The TRIVA is optimized for distance vision and the use of digital devices, enabling relaxed fatigue-free vision while using a computer, laptop or smartphone. The TRIVA has a blue light filter to support this.
How is the visual impression with the TRIVA in everyday life?
The smart TRIVA design has been specially developed for the needs of patients in their daily lives. The IOL harmonizes with physiological processes and is highly functional, making it perfectly suited for everyday use.
For example, the ring structure of TRIVA is optimized to the natural pupil opening. Pupils change their diameter dynamically depending on light conditions and visual requirements.
In low light conditions, the pupil is dilated, and the entire optical range is used, both the central ring field and the edge area without rings. This supports distance vision, which is particularly important in poor lighting conditions, such as when driving a car at twilight.
Close-up vision, such as reading, is usually done with bright illumination and a small pupil. Automatically, only the IOL ring area required for close vision is used. This is how TRIVA’s design continuously covers all visual ranges from near to medium, to far, providing a natural visual impression.
The TRIVA is optimized for vision at everyday working distances and adapted in particular to the requirements of a digital environment. The IOL enables most daily visual tasks, such as reading prices in the supermarket, using a mobile phone or working on a PC without glasses at all distances.
Treatment costs
How much does the treatment cost?
The cost of cataract treatment is covered by health insurance in Germany. The additional costs for a premium IOL are borne by the patient. Please contact your healthcare provider for information on individual health services. After a successful treatment, the cost for expensive varifocals is eliminated.
